Palmetto Motorsports provides on-site GED tutoring courtesy of Horry County Schools Adult Education. All adult education enrollment fees are covered by PALM and we even pay for your GED testing fees when you are ready to take the test! Classes are small, unlike traditional adult education classes, so lots of one-on-one attention is available.
After students have taken the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) test to see where their basic skills levels are, your instructor will create a curriculum just for you to help with your problem areas. Instruction consists of a combination between workbooks, WorkKeys and computer-based programs that are easy to navigate and highly effective!
GED Students must put in a minumum of 5 hours a week of GED preparation. Those students who do not meet the minimum requirement of hours will not be allowed to attend their job skills training classes on Wednesday and Thursday. GED classes are held at PALM on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4pm until 9pm (a total of 10 hours). Students can come anytime between those hours to get their hours of study completed for the week.

South Carolina WorkKeys History
South Carolina has been using the WorkKeys® employment system and is currently the third largest user of this system in the nation. Although usage of a skills assessment system has become a national movement, the desire for a statewide system arose organically within South Carolina. In 1998, a small group of professionals across South Carolina's technical colleges, WIA local areas, adult education, etc. who were already using the system formed the South Carolina WorkKeys® Users Group to identify best practices and to support each other's efforts. As usage and group membership grew, word of the system's success in job placement began to spread within the business community. The group continues to meet and has over 100 members, made up of administrators from the Workforce Investment system, South Carolina's technical college system, K-12 education, Adult Education, and Job Corps. As a result of this grass-roots movement, partners across the state including the sixteen (16) technical colleges, the twelve local Workforce Investment Act areas, providers of adult education, and businesses are at varying stages of development and implementation of a skills assessment system and work readiness certificate program.
Recognizing the value of the assessment system as well as the reality of inconsistent statewide application, a number of additional groups in South Carolina including the Career Readiness Consortium, a multi-state group meeting over the course of the last three years; the Workforce Innovation Network group from the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce; the Palmetto Institute; and the Workforce Education Task Force of the Council on Competitiveness called for and helped create the push for a statewide assessment initiative. By creating a common "skills" language, this system will facilitate communication among public and agency partners, educational institutions, business and industry, and other relevant partners.
At the request of all of these groups, the Department of Commerce and the Workforce Education Task Force established a WorkKeys® Task Force comprised of representatives from the local WIA administrators, technical college presidents, adult education, vocational rehabilitation, and business and industry to collaborate, finalize, and actually implement a statewide approach. This initiative is the work of that group. |
