Millerwelds.com The shortage of certified welders is a constant concern for the future of the industry, yet too few organizations have created successful programs that introduce new blood to the workforce. In the heart of racing country, however, one company has found a way to engage new welders by reaching out and teaching them in ways that traditional schools have not.

Palmetto Motorsports, a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina-based racing company, created the Palmetto Advancement for Learning Motorsports (PALM) program. PALM, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit company, takes at-risk youth and non-traditional learners of all ages and molds them into skilled welders while giving them the resources to become self-reliant and successful individuals. Putting The Pieces Together

(5-13-2008) When the motorcycle technology course began nearly 12 weeks ago, a new group of students looked upon various motorcycle parts; causing their minds to run with creativity, knowing that these parts would soon result in a custom built motorcycle. Now, these students are proud of their completed project and great creation.

Under the instruction of Dick Martin, a custom motorcycle professional, these students ventured on a journey that would lead them from mere pieces to a final masterpiece; a completed custom built bike. The final project will be sold so that this learning experience process could start again.

New Blood For an Old Sport

(4-30-2008) Myrtle Beach, SC - Saturday night was a long awaited night for Brandon Elvis, as he pulled onto the Myrtle Beach Speedway. Elvis and PALM racing couldn't contain their anticipation as he made his first appearance in the Limited Late Model division.

After much preparation for this 2008 season Elvis supporters and the PALM Racing team were thrilled about his first of many races. Elvis drove the #4 KGB Bikini Chevrolet Monte Carlo to a third place finish in a thirteen car field. For Elvis, Saturday night was a great success and he looks forward to racing more this season. "I am happy about the previous run but now I have to get out there and progress for future races", said Elvis.

About Palmetto Motorsports

Palmetto Motorsports is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation established to provide job skill opportunities to youths and adults in Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg counties in the motorsports, aviation and automotive industries. Funding for this program is provided by the Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments; Waccamaw Workforce Investment Board.

The Palmetto Advancement for Learning Motorsports (PALM) is open to all individuals who are eligible. PALM specializes in training at-risk youth ages 16-21 providing them with the opportunity to acquire their GED and obtain job skills for the demand-driven workforce. For more information regarding enrollment and eligibility requirements, please refer to the Apply page.

Classes are generally held in the evening Monday through Thursday from 6 PM to 9 PM.
