Program Curriculum

 

The Palmetto Motorsports curriculum is competency-based and comprehensive to ensure every student acquires the skill he/she needs in order to succeed in either the motorsports, aviation or automotive industries. Each class is catered to the individual and is largely hands-on. There are four 12 week sessions a year. After the student completes his/her courses and the instructors feel he/she is competent and workforce-ready, the student is placed in a job where their new skills can be applied. Classes currently offered at PALM include:

•Welding
•Paint & Body (101-Advanced)
•Motorsports (101-Advanced)

Class Outline

Motorsports: The Motorsports class touches base on all aspects of the motorsports field allowing students to determine what they are most interested in within the motorsports realm. Students start in Motorsports 101 and then have the opportunity to continue on to more in-depth, advanced courses. In addition to special projects and field experiences, the Motorsports class also touches base on the following:
  • Team Management
  • Safety
  • Math & Measurement
  • Tools
  • Equipment
  • Welding
  • Paint & Body Finishing

Welding: The welding course instructs students how to fabricate and weld metal. The welding procedures taught are Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW). Students are certified in MIG and TIG welding through the American Welding Society (AWS) which is the nation's leading welding education certifiers. Students of PALM are encouraged to enroll in this course first as welding is a staple of the motorsports, aviation and automotive industries.

Paint & Body: This course covers all elements of body work from wrecked vehicle repair to automotive restoration. Students are instructed in:
  • Introduction to Paint & Body
  • Tools & Terminology
  • Methods of Paint Removal
  • Welding
  • Panel Repair/Replacement
  • Painting & Refinishing
